Survivorship can be defined in a couple of different ways: having no disease after the completion of treatment or the process of living with, through, and beyond cancer. The Institute of Medicine and the Commission on Cancer have suggested all cancer centers provide Survivorship Care Plans to all patients who have been treated for their cancer, with a curative intent, in order to help patients through the transition phase after cancer treatment is done. Part of the goal of a survivorship visit is to help connect survivors with medical professionals who are experienced in counseling people through life transitions and working through the emotions that can accompany these.
